Solar Panel Installation in Burlington, NC

Yes Solar Solutions had the pleasure of installing rooftop solar panels for Burlington, NC-based heirloom furniture manufacturer Skram not long ago. Skram Furniture Company makes heirloom-quality furniture for design-driven residential and commercial spaces. As manufacturers, companies like Skram use a considerable amount of energy to power their equipment. Skram wanted to take a new approach. They first contacted Yes Solar in March of 2014, but it would be a while before the journey was complete.

Skram’s Need for Sustainability

Skram has always felt a ground-up responsibility to promote sustainable design and manufacturing practices. The company uses non-toxic adhesives and industrial-strength, low-VOC, water-based polyurethane finishes. They also utilize locally harvested materials as a source for timber. In 2008, the company began using an LEED-contributing, formaldehyde-free, 100% pre-consumer recycled content substrate in veneered products. Not only does the team feel inspired to make sustainable decisions within their headquarters, they also participate in networks of those leading the pack for environmentally friendly practices. The company is a member of American Forests, the Rainforest Alliance, and the Sustainable Furnishings Council.

In 2014, they were ready to take the next step with a rooftop solar panel installation at their Burlington, NC headquarters. However, they first needed to address wiring throughout the plant. When they found themselves in a position to proceed with solar options, they called Yes Solar. They applied for and received a Rural Energy for America Program grant, and we got to work in December of 2015.

The Results of Rooftop Installation

For Skram, Yes Solar installed a 27.7 kW ballasted solar array on the factor’s roof. The energy received through these panels now directly powers the machinery used to build the company’s furniture. Any excess energy is fed back into the traditional energy grid. The measurable environmental benefits of Skram’s conversion include the annual offset of over 30,000 pounds of coal and over 50,000 pounds of CO2.  This helps the company to manufacturer cleaner and more responsibly. The company feels immense pride in what they were able to accomplish with the help of Yes Solar.   They have established themselves as a leader in sustainability in North Carolina.
