Commercial Solar Repowering in North Carolina: How SAS Modernized an Aging Solar Farm

If your commercial solar system was installed 10–20 years ago, today’s technology may offer opportunities to enhance its performance even further. That was the opportunity facing SAS, and the data and AI leader turned it into a showcase of smart, strategic sustainability.

Back in 2008, SAS built the first 1‑megawatt single-site solar farm at its Cary, North Carolina headquarters, an early and bold investment in corporate clean energy. But as solar technology rapidly evolved, SAS made another game-changing choice: repower the system instead of letting performance decline.

In 2024, SAS partnered with us to complete a full commercial solar repowering: restoring output, upgrading equipment, and extending the system’s life without expanding its footprint.

That’s not maintenance.
That’s business foresight.

What Is Commercial Solar Repowering?

Solar repowering replaces outdated equipment with today’s high-efficiency technology, turning aging solar arrays back into high-performance, modern assets. It is smarter and more sustainable than starting from scratch, and often far more cost-effective.

At SAS, the repowering project included:

Decommissioning and recycling:

  • 5,040 legacy 190W and 200W modules
  • 2 aging 500kW central inverters
  • DC combiners and disconnects

Upgrading to:

  • 1,890 Heliene 530W high-efficiency modules
  • A SunPower single-axis East–West tracker system
  • 19 CPS 50kW string inverters, eliminating single points of failure
  • New AC combiners and disconnects

In just 17 days, crews installed nearly 1,900 modules, moving 60 tons of equipment and working through sub-freezing conditions to stay on schedule.

The result: a stronger, more resilient system designed for decades of reliable, high-performance operation.

The Business Advantage of Commercial Solar Repowering

Every commercial solar system experiences performance decline over time. Repowering transforms that decline into an opportunity for renewal and growth.

Benefits of commercial solar repowering include:

  • Restoring and improving production capacity
  • Increasing energy yield per acre
  • Extending system life by 10–20 years
  • Reducing downtime with decentralized inverter architecture
  • Maximizing ROI from existing land and infrastructure

By replacing more than 5,000 outdated panels with modern 530W modules and advanced tracking, SAS dramatically boosted energy generation without new land, new permitting, or new interconnection.

No expansion.
No waste.
Just smarter, future-ready solar.

North Carolina Corporate Sustainability in Action

SAS didn’t wait for equipment to fail; they acted early to preserve long-term performance and value. That forward-thinking decision reinforced the company’s leadership in clean energy and demonstrated how North Carolina businesses can modernize existing assets for maximum sustainability impact.

If your solar array was built in the late 2000s or early 2010s, similar gains may be closer than you think. You do not always need a new system, you need the right modernization plan.
