The Richlands Institute of Innovation (R2i2) in Columbia, SC contracted with MB Kahn to build its new building which included rooftop solar. The learning environment at R2i2 prepares students for the work-place, certification programs and/or higher education in order to meet workforce needs in the Midlands and throughout the state of South Carolina. Its goal is to fully immerse students in a professional culture, solving real-world problems, mentored by real employers while receiving high school and possibly college credit. Additionally, the facility supports entrepreneurial opportunities for students via an innovation incubator that provides space and support for students and businesses to work together on startup ideas.
What better fit for an artistic statement of solar and a cutting edge design? And despite the Institute’s investment and commitment to solar, it was virtually invisible to the community and students. Yes provided the answer with a Spotlight Solar Curve as a statement of sustainability. While the 1.5 kW output does not add substantially to the rooftop solar generation, it adds immeasurably to the Institute’s symbolic commitment to clean energy. The Curve installation uses Enphase 215 micro-inverters and a vibrant blue base to signify the dynamic nature of R2i2.
