Still Yes Solar, Still Independent: 16 Years of Solar Leadership in North Carolina

Yes Solar Solutions co-founders Stew and Kathy Miller in front of their Cary, North Carolina headquarters, celebrating 16 years of solar leadership.

As we celebrate the 16th anniversary of Yes Solar Solutions, we are taking a moment to reflect. On where we began, how far we have come, and what lies ahead.

In 2009, we were installing 3 kW residential systems. Today, we design and install 20+ kW solar systems, many paired with battery storage, and scale up to megawatt-sized commercial projects. What began as a local solar company in Cary has grown into a trusted name across North Carolina, completing more than 2,000 installations and building a reputation for solar leadership.

16 Years of Trusted Solar Leadership in North Carolina

These projects are not just numbers. They represent neighbors, friends, and families who chose Yes Solar because of our reputation for quality, trust, and personalized service. Along the way, we have had the privilege of working with exceptional employees, many of whom are now leading professionals in the clean energy industry.

We have seen a lot of change in 16 years. In our earliest days, state-level incentives like the 35% North Carolina renewable energy tax credit helped open the door for many homeowners to consider solar. That credit sunset in 2015, but we continued forward. Today, we are helping customers navigate new options like Duke Energy’s PowerPair program, while also adapting to challenges such as federal tariff shifts and evolving energy policies. Our team has remained focused on long-term customer success through every phase of change.

This level of adaptability is one of the key strengths of being an owner-managed solar company. We are not accountable to outside investors or a corporate board. We are responsible to our customers, our employees, and the solar community we helped build in North Carolina.

Why This Matters Now

Recently, a rumor surfaced that Yes Solar Solutions had been sold. We want to make it abundantly clear:

“Yes Solar is not for sale. We are not in acquisition talks, and we remain fully committed to leading this company into its next chapter.”
Stew Miller & Kathy Miller, Co-Founders of Yes Solar Solutions

While Stew and Kathy are stepping back from some day-to-day roles, this is not a signal of any change in ownership. These shifts are part of a thoughtful evolution that ensures the company’s future while staying true to its mission.

We understand where the confusion may have come from. In an industry where many companies have been bought out, restructured, or left the state entirely, stability can sometimes feel surprising. For us, it is foundational.

What the Future Holds

Like any well-run company, Yes Solar believes in thoughtful succession planning. When the time comes, our ideal transition would be to employee ownership. That ensures those who know the business best are the ones carrying it forward.

We have experience with this kind of transition. When our founders exited their previous venture, the Primrose Schools of Cary, they passed ownership to two family members and a long-time employee. That employee’s children had attended one of the schools. Twenty years later, those schools are still upholding the same standards and values that were established decades ago. This kind of legacy matters to us.

We are applying that same long-term thinking to Yes Solar. With 16 years of experience in the North Carolina solar industry and a deep understanding of the market, we are confident we will know when the time is right and who the right team is.

But to be clear, that time is not now

We are still the same Yes Solar. Still local. Still owned by Stew and Kathy Miller. And most importantly, still here when you need us. Call (919) 459-4155 or get in touch to learn more.
