This April, as we celebrate Earth Month, it is crucial to think about the role that renewable energy plays in combating environmental challenges. One of the largest contributors to global warming is the burning of fossil fuels for electricity. Solar power offers a clean, sustainable alternative that helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions while allowing us the same luxuries with our increasing electricity demands.
Earth Month is a time to recognize how solar energy, clean technology, and community efforts drive real change, starting right here at home. Installing solar panels is one of the most impactful ways individuals can contribute to the fight against climate change and protect our earth.
The Solar Impact: Community, Jobs, and Clean Energy
As a local solar installer, we have seen firsthand the positive impact solar energy can have on the community. Not only does solar reduce energy bills, but it also creates jobs. In fact, the solar industry is one of the fastest-growing sectors in North Carolina, ranking 5th in the nation for solar capacity. More jobs mean a stronger economy and more opportunities for people in our community.
It is also worth noting that solar energy helps keep energy dollars local. Installing solar panels on homes and businesses, reduces the amount of money flowing out of the state for energy imports. Instead, we invest in clean, sustainable energy solutions that stay within our community, providing lasting value.
Community Efforts: Growing Solar Together
Yes Solar Solutions began working on providing solar to lower income homes through federal and local grants in 2023. These small (4-kilowatt) systems typically offset about 50% of the home’s energy cost. This results in immediate savings, as there is no investment on the part of the homeowner.
Organized by Central Pines Regional Council, local jurisdictions put together this program to provide free solar for qualified low to moderate income (LMI) households in the Triangle region.
Incentives and Financing: Making Solar Accessible to Everyone
One of the biggest hurdles when considering solar is the initial investment. With federal and state incentives, as well as financing options, going solar is more affordable than it appears.
In 2025, North Carolina continues to offer great tax incentives, including the federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which allows homeowners to deduct 30% of their solar installation costs from their federal taxes.
Plus, if you live in Duke Energy territory, the Duke Energy PowerPair℠ program offers eligible homeowners a one-time incentive of up to $9,000 when installing a solar system with battery storage. This can be stacked on top of the federal tax credit.
Yes Solar also offers a solar leasing program for those considering solar and battery who may not be prepared to make the initial upfront investment but still want to enjoy the benefit of immediate savings on their electricity bills. Solar leasing also provides coverage for any required maintenance over the life of the system, so you can enjoy solar benefits, hassle-free.
Another route to consider is the Solar and Energy Loan Fund (SELF) which provides accessible financing options for homeowners looking to invest in solar. SELF does not look at credit score as the primary indicator for approving a borrower but instead focuses on the ability to repay along with a history of responsible loan repayments. Yes Solar Solutions is proud to be the first installer in the Triangle region to offer SELF financing, empowering you to make sustainable improvements with ease.
These programs and innovative financing options make solar energy an attainable goal for many families, regardless of income level. Over time, the energy savings and potential for increased property value can create a solid return on investment.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Solar in North Carolina
As we move through Earth Month 2025, it’s clear that homeowners and businesses understand the importance of sustainability, and solar technology continues to evolve to meet the growing demand. From innovations in solar panel efficiency to the development of energy storage systems that allow homeowners to store excess energy for later use, solar technology is advancing rapidly, making it a more attractive option than ever before.
