How Endswell Funeral Home Became the First Solar-Powered Aquamation Facility in the Country

At Endswell Funeral Home, sustainability is not only the topic of conversation; it is built into how they operate every day. They focus on giving families more environmentally-conscious options while creating a space that reflects the values behind their work. It goes beyond energy savings and shapes how their facility functions day to day.

One example is their use of aquamation, an environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional fire cremation. Unlike conventional cremation, which relies heavily on natural gas and high heat, aquamation uses water, gentle heat, and electricity in a controlled process. That means less energy use and fewer emissions compared to traditional cremation.

The Nation’s First Solar-Powered Aquamation Facility

Because of that commitment, Endswell decided to invest in solar energy as well. By pairing aquamation with on-site solar power, Endswell became the first solar-powered aquamation facility in the country. Their system helps offset the energy needed to operate the aquamation equipment while supporting other parts of the facility as well.

Their system was designed to do more than only generate power. Along with a rooftop array, they installed a pole-mounted parking canopy that produces clean energy while providing shaded parking for visitors and space for EV charging stations.

Endswell was able to move forward with both through a USDA’s 50% grant reimbursement. This expanded system allowed them to fully offset the energy use of their aquamation machine and support additional on-site infrastructure.

System Details:

  • 69 modules (590 W)
  • 40.710 kW DC system size
  • (2) 25 kW inverters

Installation began in September 2025, and the system received permission to operate on November 26, 2025.

Today, Endswell is generating approximately 53,247kWh of clean energy on-site annually while making better use of their space and continuing to invest in the environmentally-conscious approach that sets them apart.
